NYT Strands is a daily word search puzzle from The New York Times that launched in March 2024. Unlike a traditional word search, every letter on the board gets used — there are no leftover letters. Your job is to find all the themed words hidden in the grid, plus one special word called the spangram.
The board is a 6×8 grid of letters. Hidden inside are several theme words (usually 6–8) that all relate to the daily theme, plus one spangram that touches two opposite sides of the board and describes the theme itself. Every single letter on the board belongs to exactly one of these words — when you’ve found them all, the entire board is filled.
What Is a Spangram?
The spangram is the most important word in every Strands puzzle. It’s a word or phrase that describes the theme connecting all the other hidden words, and it physically spans from one edge of the board to the opposite edge. When you find it, it highlights in yellow and the board splits into two halves.
For example, if the theme is “things in a toolbox,” the spangram might be TOOLBOX — and the theme words would be things like HAMMER, WRENCH, DRILL, and PLIERS hidden across the grid.
How Hints Work in Strands
Strands has a built-in hint system. If you find a valid English word that isn’t one of the theme words, it counts toward earning a hint. Every three non-theme words you find gives you one hint, which highlights the letters of a theme word on the board. You don’t lose anything for guessing wrong words — they just don’t count toward your hint meter.

1. Find the Spangram First
The spangram tells you the theme, and knowing the theme makes every other word easier to find. Look for longer words that connect two opposite edges of the board.
2. Read the Theme Clue Carefully
The theme clue at the top is sometimes straightforward and sometimes a wordplay hint. If it says “running out of time,” the words might be about clocks — or about things that expire. Think about multiple interpretations.
3. Use Non-Theme Words to Earn Hints
If you’re stuck, start tracing any valid English words you can find. Every three non-theme words gives you a free hint that reveals a theme word’s location. There’s no penalty for this.
4. Remember: Every Letter Gets Used
There are no leftover letters. If you’ve found most of the words and some letters remain unhighlighted, the remaining word has to use exactly those leftover letters. This constraint actually makes the last word or two much easier to find.
5. Words Can Twist and Turn
Strands words aren’t limited to straight lines. A single word can go right, then down, then diagonally — as long as each letter touches the previous one.
