Wordle Words: The Complete List & Guide

Every Wordle answer is one of 2,315 possible words. Every guess you type must come from a larger dictionary of accepted words. This page puts the full answer list in your hands, A to Z, with the letter data I computed directly from it: which letters actually appear, where they sit, and how to turn those numbers into better guesses. I use this same data every morning when I write the day’s hints.

Wordle Answers vs Valid Guesses: What’s the Difference?

Wordle runs on two word lists. The answer list holds 2,315 common, familiar words, and the day’s solution always comes from it. The valid guess list is much bigger, roughly 13,000 words, and includes the answers plus thousands of extra words that will never be solutions. A guess from the bigger list still gives you tile feedback, so exotic words work as information probes, but your final guesses should come from the answer list below. Our Wordle Solver exists for exactly this: it filters the big dictionary down to what fits your tiles.

The Numbers: What’s Actually in the Answer List

I counted every letter in all 2,315 answers rather than quoting someone else’s table. Each letter is counted once per word, so a word like EERIE counts E one time. Here is what the list really looks like.

Most common letters

Letter% of answers containing it
E45.6%
A39.3%
R36.2%
O29.1%
T28.8%
L28.0%
I27.9%
S26.7%
N23.8%
U19.7%

E shows up in nearly half of all answers. The top nine letters (E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S, N) cover the vast majority of what you’ll ever need. At the other end, J (1.2%), Q (1.3%), Z (1.5%), and X (1.6%) barely register. If your first two guesses cover the top nine letters between them, you’re playing the odds correctly.

G1155.0%
D1114.8%
M1074.6%

S starts almost one answer in six, more than double the runner-up. That’s why strong openers tend to begin with S, C, T, or R. Only 20 answers in the whole list start with J, 6 with Y, and 3 with Z.

E and Y together end one answer in three. If your final guess ends in J, Q, V, or X, reconsider. Those letters almost never close out an answer.

How many vowels do answers have?

Counting A, E, I, O, U as vowels and Y as a consonant:

Vowels in the answerAnswersShare

21,33957.8%
32279.8%

Nearly nine answers in ten have one or two vowels. Two vowels is the norm at 57.8%. A 3-vowel opener is rarely wasted, but don’t assume every answer is vowel-heavy: almost a third have just one.

Why Word Counts Differ Across Sites

You’ll see slightly different totals on different Wordle sites, and here’s why. The original published answer list held 2,315 words. Since then, the New York Times has removed a small number of words from the active rotation (words players have reported include AGORA, PUPAL, LYNCH, and FIBRE). Some sites count the original list, some count the current rotation, and some mix in valid guesses. The list on this page is the original 2,315-word set, verified as 2,315 unique five-letter words in alphabetical order. When a word matters for a specific puzzle, cross-check it against our past answers archive.

Words With Repeated Letters: The Real Number

About one in three Wordle answers contains a repeated letter. The exact count from the list above: 749 of 2,315 answers (32.4%) have at least one repeat. You’ll see “1 in 6” quoted in older guides, but a direct count of the answer list doesn’t support it. Repeats are the most underestimated feature in the game, and they’re the number one streak-killer precisely because most players assume all five letters are different.

The most doubled letters are E (167 words), O (81), L (71), A (70), T (60), R (58), and S (47). Watch for LL, EE, OO, SS, TT pairs, and the sneaky triple-letter words: EERIE, EMCEE, MELEE, GEESE. If you’ve placed four distinct letters and nothing fits, stop hunting new letters. Assume the double.

Words That Trick the Solver

Some valid answers break every heuristic solvers rely on, which is exactly why they’re dangerous. Keep these patterns in mind when the board stops making sense:

Rare-letter answers. JAZZY, FUZZY, QUAKE, ZESTY, NYMPH, GLYPH, QUEUE. Your opener probably tested none of these letters. If two guesses of common letters come back empty, pivot to the rare shelf fast instead of burning a third guess on more E’s and A’s.

Deceptive doubles. CIVIC, RADAR, LEVEL, KAYAK, MAMMA, PUPPY, HIPPO. The repeat hides inside an otherwise ordinary word, so your brain files it under “all different letters” and moves on.

Vowel deserts. Only 13 answers in the whole list have zero vowels (A, E, I, O, U): CRYPT, DRYLY, WRYLY, TRYST, and 9 more. But one-vowel answers number 733. Don’t over-commit to finding a second vowel that isn’t there.

How to Use This List With the Solver

The list and the Wordle Solver are built to work together. Here’s the workflow I actually use on hard days:

  1. Play your first two guesses in the game. Say CRANE comes back with E green in position 5, R yellow, and C, A, N gray.
  2. Enter that feedback in the solver. Green E at 5, yellow R, gray C/A/N.
  3. Read the narrowed list. The solver cuts thousands of words down to the few dozen that fit. Every suggestion comes from lists like this one.
  4. Prefer suggestions with untested common letters. A candidate testing T, L, or S teaches you more than one testing Q or Z.
  5. Cross off anything in the past answers archive. What’s left is short, eligible, and worth your remaining guesses.

The Complete Wordle Answer List (A–Z)

Every word below comes from the 2,315-word Wordle answer list, in alphabetical order. The count after each letter is the number of answers starting with it. Search with Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac).

Verification note: The list was programmatically checked: 2,315 entries, all unique, all five letters, in alphabetical order. The NYT has removed a small number of words from the active rotation over time (examples reported by players include AGORA, PUPAL, LYNCH, FIBRE and a few others). This page reflects the original published answer set. If a word matters for a specific puzzle, cross-check it against recent answers in our past answers archive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Wordle answer words are there?

The original Wordle answer list contains 2,315 words, and every daily puzzle’s solution comes from it. The full A–Z list is on this page, with per-letter counts. Note that different sites publish slightly different totals because the NYT has removed a few words from the active rotation over time.

What’s the difference between Wordle answers and valid guesses?

Wordle accepts roughly 13,000 five-letter words as guesses, but only the 2,315 words on the answer list can ever be the day’s solution. The rest give you tile feedback but will never be the answer, which makes them useful as information probes on early guesses.

What is the most common letter in Wordle answers?

E appears in 45.6% of answers, followed by A (39.3%), R (36.2%), O (29.1%), and T (28.8%). These figures were counted directly from the 2,315-word list on this page. The rarest letters are J, Q, Z, and X, each in under 2% of answers.

What is the best starting word in Wordle?

The best starters pack in the most common letters. Words like SLATE, CRANE, TRACE, and STARE are widely recommended because they test E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S, and N efficiently. Our data-backed ranking lives on the best starting words page.

Do Wordle answers ever have repeated letters?

Yes, more often than most guides admit. A direct count of the answer list finds 749 words with a repeated letter, which is 32.4%, roughly one in three. Always consider a double letter when you’re stuck on guess 4 or 5.

Has the NYT removed any words from the answer list?

Yes, a small number. Words reported as removed from the rotation over time include AGORA, PUPAL, LYNCH, FIBRE, and a few others. The list above reflects the original published answer set.

Where can I check if a word was already a Wordle answer?

Use our past Wordle answers archive. Search any word, date, or puzzle number to see if it’s been used.
